Counselling

Looking to build on your existing professional skills or seeking a new career pathway? Whether you are looking to practice as a professional Counsellor or to simply expand your ability to communicate, problem solve and support others, our Diploma of Counselling equips students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in this growing and important service delivery area.

Counsellors will provide therapy, advice, advocacy and support to their clients. They assist clients to establish and achieve goals that are intended to improve their quality of life. Typically, counsellors will work collaboratively with other professionals, such as psychologists, social workers and other health practitioners, to manage their clients’  emotional, physical and mental health and wellbeing. 

• Successful completion of Year 12 in an Australian secondary school system or equivalent
• IELTS 5.5 minimum

The Diploma of Counselling offers graduates a variety of employment opportunities within the health, human and community services sectors. Counselling professionals are typically employed in a range of settings including outreach services. hospitals, shelters, community service providers, educational institutions, prisons and long term residential facilities.

Core Units

• Recognise and respond to crisis situations
• Establish and confirm the counselling relationship
• Apply specialist interpersonal and counselling interview skills
• Facilitate the counselling relationship and process
• Research and apply personality and development theories
• Apply learning theories in counselling
• Select and use counselling therapies
• Support counselling clients in decision-making processes
• Develop, facilitate and review all aspects of case management
• Work with diverse people
• Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety
• Work legally and ethically
• Reflect on and improve own professional practice
